The Workshop on Gambling Addiction Within the Scope of Behavioral Addictions Was Held
The workshop themed “Gambling Addiction Within the Scope of Behavioral Addictions”, organized by the Türkiye Health Policies Institute, was held in collaboration with the Green Crescent (Yeşilay) and the Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate, and hosted by Istanbul Medeniyet University. The event aimed at bringing together relevant institutions to develop concrete policy recommendations for fighting against gambling addiction.
In her opening speech, Prof. Dr. Işıl Maral, President of the Türkiye Health Policies Institute, emphasized the societal and individual impacts of behavioral addictions, highlighting the increasing visibility of gambling addiction through digital platforms and stressing the need for strong inter-institutional policies.
Opening remarks were also delivered by Prof. Dr. Fatih Sarıoğlu, Vice Rector of Istanbul Medeniyet University; Prof. Dr. Muhammed Tayyib Kadak, Vice President of the Green Crescent; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Enes Gökler, President of the Türkiye Public Health and Chronic Diseases Institute; and Prof. Dr. Şirin Güven, President of the Türkiye Maternity, Child and Adolescent Health Institute.
Representatives from various institutions attended the workshop, including Department of Combating Cybercrime, Information Technologies and Communications Authority, relevant units of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Family and Social Services, as well as psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, guidance and counseling specialists, members of the Green Crescent Scientific Board, legal experts, and academics from various universities.
Throughout the day, the intensive and structured program focused on institutional evaluations based on the key questions “Where are we? What are we doing? What are we planning?” The event continued with presentations, group work, report consolidation, and closing sessions. Comprehensive discussions were held on topics such as legislative regulations, preventive education programs, the supervision of digital gambling, and increasing access to treatment.
The workshop, shaped by the active contributions of participants, is expected to enhance inter-institutional coordination and support the development of joint strategies. The official report compiling the workshop’s outcomes and recommendations is expected to be shared with the public soon and serve as a strategic guide for Türkiye’s fight against gambling addiction.
